Queens' 4 Selwyn/Robinson 1

A great performance and start to our cup campaign with a decisive victory against the league winners. The game was tight throughout the 1st half, with Queens' attacking well down the centre and finally getting the lead through Gabriel. Unfortunately, selwyn hit back moments after with a weak goal from a set piece but after that setback, queens' defended much better for the rest of the game, barely giving selwyn a chance.
The game was level 1-1 at half time, and after the rousing team talk from yours truly (modesty is over rated ;-) we began the half much more positively looking to play more directly and pressing the opposition all over the pitch much more effectively. We dominated the 2nd half with goals from Yue, Tom and a brilliant lob from Gabriel and we could have had more as Mark had a great header saved off the line and many of Tom's other shots came close too.
Very pleasing start to cup campaign, and it was very good to get a full strength lineup onto the pitch.
Goals: Gabriel (2), Tom, Yue
Team: Dan, Peter, Andy, Mark, John; Simon, Itzam, Gustavo, Martin; Tom, Gabriel; Yue

Selwyn (away) Sunday 22nd, 1.15pm @ King's

After last week's 3-1 friendly win over a decent Clare/Fitz team, this weekend we have a far more daunting task coming up against the league winners Selwyn in our first group game!

Our Cup group contains:
Selwyn
Queens'
Engineering
St. John's
MBA

and as Johns and MBA were both midtable in the 2nd division and Engineering were in our division 1 and we beat them convincingly. So really, us and Selwyn are favourites to qualify from this group, but anything can happen in football!
There is a complicated playoff system after the group stage which guarantees another 2 games after the 4 group games, 3 games if we get to the top cup final and 4 games to reach the lower cup final.

Anyway, hope to see you all there on sunday!

PS. TRAINING TOPS HAVE BEEN DISPATCHED FROM THE MANUFACTURERS!! and they said delivery could be up to 7 days so if they've not arrive by sunday, they'll be ready for the game after! Hooray!
But unfortunately for Peter Mason, our ever dependable right-back, they have phoned me up to say they've lost your jacket somewhere and are having to make a new one for you so yours will be slightly delayed, sorry!!

Clare/Fitz (away) Sat 14h @ 12pm

Location: Clare sports ground
Opposition: Clare/Fitz, recently promoted from the MCR division 2
Time: 12pm kick off, meet at 11.30am on Saturday 14th January

This term sees the MCR cup competition, and this first game is a friendly in order to ensure everyone is fit and ready for the upcoming term. We're trying to employ a more squad based system now, so if anyone knows of any players who would like to play for queens', please invite them along to this game. The main reason we struggled to win against the best teams in the league was due to our team not having enough players for key games (3 games out of 8 we had less than 11 players).

But this is a new start and an opportunity for Queens' to win its first ever MCR cup, and after we got to the semi-finals last season, we should have a good shot!
